Bugger me, it’s an iceberg Pretend to be on phone Pick up, pick up. Iceberg, straight ahead! Have you ever heard of the titanic? It was the world's largest ship of its time, in 1912. If the bow of the titanic was pointing up it would be as tall as the eiffel tower. It was built as a passenger steamer that ran on coal. They wanted to make headlines by getting to America a day earlier than planned. They wanted to be the biggest, most stable and luxurious ship of all time. The Titanic was called the unsinkable ship. They predicted that the ship would never sink. This was later to be found out that that prediction was wrong, really wrong! If you could afford 870 pounds, or $100 000 NZ dollars today you would have a first class ticket on the Titanic from England to America. In 1st class you could have a mini luxury house that included your own table and chairs, separate bedroom, bathroom and toilet. The walls were all padded and covered in fabric. They had fancy chandeliers and decorations. Some people went broke to buy a ticket on Titanic, in hope of a better life in America. In comparison you could buy a berth (one bed) for up to 8 pound or $900 today. For this you got 1 bed in a room with 3 other people and a sink. There were no decorations and no space, unless you were on the bed. Experts have asked 3 questions about the titanic disaster. They are Why did it hit the iceberg? Why did it sink so quickly? Why did so many die? Today I will be giving a basic answer to each question. Why did the Titanic hit the iceberg? The ship was going too fast to be able to slow down. It was going fast because the captain was under pressure to make headlines and arrive earlier. Because of its speed Titanic could not turn because the ship was too big, with too small a rudder. Why did it sink so quickly? In coal storage there was a wall. If the Titanic struck an iceberg the water shouldn’t have been able to get any further. But there was a problem with coal storage, and the heat weakened the wall, and then when the water came up the pressure made the wall break in half. This caused the Titanic to take on more water, which helped it to sink. Why did so many people die? The water was really cold, with icebergs! It is said to be -2.2 degrees celsius. At this temperature hypothermia starts to set in in 15 minutes and after 30 minutes you would be dead. Another major problem was that they did not have enough lifeboats for all the passengers on the ship. They only had enough space on the liferafts for half of the passengers onboard. They also didn’t fill each lifeboat up with enough people. This might be because they didn’t practise the drill of putting people in the liferafts. The Titanic really went through the wars when she hit an iceberg april 14 1912. This ship had a lot of things going against her; -People forcing her to do lots of things such as forcing her to go fast; -Using sub-standard coal which caused the structure and design of the ship wall to break -And finally safety procedures weren’t at the standard they should have been. The Titanic has truly gone down in history as one of the most grand, luxurious and biggest ships in her time to sink.
